“He represents Florida” Accepted As Sufficient Explanation For Why Congressman Is Wearing Gas Mask

Images of Congressman Matt Gaetz wearing a gas mask on the House floor have garnered significant attention on social media and beyond. Gaetz intended the provocative gesture to trigger a discussion about the risks of contracting the coronavirus politicans face given their frequent travel and meetings with their electorate.

Though Gaetz had told his staffers to expect a flood of questions about the gas mask demanding a long detailed explanation, that was not what happened.

“As soon as they heard I was from Florida they appeared satisfied with that as an explanation and promptly hung up.”

Members of the public who inadventantly learned more through the print media were surprised to know Gaetz’s stunt was connected to the coronavirus outbreak.

“I just thought, you know, Florida man.”

Though he knows no-one will pay any attention to this, Gaetz says there’s an important lesson here about stimulating debate.

“If you want to spark a meaningful discussion by doing something bizarre, the first step is to not be from Florida.”
