On This Day: Most Remembered Event In The History of England Occurs

Battle of HastingsI've got something in my eye.

On this day, October 14, the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066. The event is significant for the death of King Harold giving rise to the Norman conquest of England. But it is even more significant as the only historical event that every single English person knows about. Ask anyone there what happened in 1066 and they will immediately respond with:

“Some kind of fight… in Hastings I think… What do I win if I’m right?”

If you push them, you might even get this:

“Something about an arrow? And a tapestry?”

And if you really press them as to what it was all about, this:

“Fucked if I know, mate. Don’t you have a signal?”
