PA Department of Agriculture Updates Invasive Species Warning For Pittsburgh To Include Swifties

Specific to Pittsburgh this weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture today updated its advice about invasive species plaguing the area.

“There is a new invasive species everyone needs to be aware of in addition to the spotted lanternfly.”

The pests, known as Swifties, are expected to descend upon the Pittsburgh metropolitan area this weekend. Though an encounter with a swarm of Swifties can be distressing, officials emphasized they are essentially harmless.

“You might consider ear protection, but there are no lingering ill effects from a Swiftie exposure.”

Unlike the case of the spotted lanternfly, no action should be taken on sighting a Swiftie.

“If you encounter any Swifties there’s no need to squish them. Just avoid them and within a few days they will have moved on to another city.”
